I recently launched a comprehensive, interactive online course called CSS for JavaScript Developers. I love writing CSS these days!įor the past year and a half, I've been focused on helping JS developers change their relationship with CSS. If you take a bit of time to learn how the language really works, though, everything becomes so much more intuitive and predictable. When your mental model is incomplete, you're bound to run into some problems. Unless you pop the hood and learn what's really going on under there, the language will always feel a bit unpredictable and inconsistent. And honestly, there's so much more I want to say! We only scratched the surface in a bunch of places.ĬSS is a deceptively complex language. My CSS reset is quite short (only 11 declarations!), and yet I've managed to spend an entire blog post talking about them. This rule will prevent that image from growing beyond its container, which feels like much more sensible default behavior to me. If an image has a "native" size of 800Ã600, the element will also be 800px wide, even if we plop it into a 500px-wide parent. Most block-level elements will automatically grow/shrink to fit their parent, but media elements like are special: they're known as replaced elements, and they don't follow the same rules. The example below lists two font families, the first with a and the second with a : css. Each font family is specified as either a or a value. This is done to keep large images from overflowing, if they're placed in a container that isn't wide enough to contain them. The font-family property lists one or more font families, separated by commas. If you've ever had a mysterious 4px gap that wasn't margin or padding or border, it was probably the âinline magic spaceâ that browsers add with line-height.Ä«y setting display: block on all images by default, we sidestep a whole category of funky issues. If we try to use an inline element in our layout, though, weird things happen. Typically, I treat images the same way I treat paragraphs or headers or sidebars they're layout elements. This doesn't jive with how I use images most of the time. This implies that they should be used in the middle of paragraphs, like or. So here's a weird thing: images are considered "inline" elements. We need to explicitly turn it off, by setting -webkit-font-smoothing to antialiased. I'm guessing they realized that it was doing more harm than good on modern hardware.Ĭonfusingly, MacOS browsers like Chrome and Safari still use subpixel antialiasing by default. In MacOS Mojave, released in 2018, Apple disabled subpixel antialiasing across the operating system. If you look at a modern monitor under a microscope, you won't see an orderly grid of R/G/B lines anymore. The physical arrangement of pixel LEDs has changed as well. Today's pixels are much smaller, invisible to the naked eye. Here's the problem: that article was written in 2012, before the era of high-DPI âretinaâ displays. You may have read a popular blog post, Stop âFixingâ Font Smoothing, that advocates against switching to âantialiasedâ. In the past, this was seen as an accessibility win, because it improved text contrast. This is a technique that aims to make text easier to read, by leveraging the R/G/B lights within each pixel. On MacOS computers, the browser will use âsubpixel antialiasingâ by default. Onest is suitable for reading long texts from the screens of any device and is recommended for government and social service sites.Alright, so this one is a bit controversial. It was born in Moldova, so it is ready from early days to be the voice of everyone who lives here. Onest can speak different languages: Romanian, Russian, Gagauz, Ukrainian and even Bulgarian. It adapts to the text, giving the best possible layout for each element in any context. All thanks to alternative symbols that set the tone and even the character of the message. For all its versatility, Onest allows text to keep its individuality. The font combines capaciousness and legibility, so it saves space without losing readability. The neutral forms of the graphemes inherit the ideas of the modernist neo-grotesques of the second half of the 20th century. In seven fonts, from thin to extra bold, Onest is designed as a hybrid of geometric and humanistic grotesques. Also, to bring Moldova's image closer to that of a modern, open country. Onest is the first Moldovan made typeface created with a mere goal - to make communication between the state and the citizen honest and understandable. Font Meme is a fonts & typography resource.

Most auto dealers can provide short-term (1 or 2 months) insurance for paperwork processing so new car owners can deal with proper insurance later. Auto insurance can possibly run more than $1,000 a year for full coverage. When a car is purchased via loan and not cash, full coverage insurance is often mandatory. Insurance-In the U.S., auto insurance is strictly mandatory to be regarded as a legal driver on public roads and is usually required before dealers can process paperwork. This fee is usually between $900 and $1,500. Destination Fee-This is a fee that covers the shipment of the vehicle from the plant to the dealer's office.A typical price tag for this fee is a few hundred dollars. If not charged separately, advertising fees are included in the auto price. Advertising Fees-This is a fee that the regional dealer pays for promoting the manufacturer's automobile in the dealer's area.Title and Registration Fees-This is the fee collected by states for vehicle title and registration.Document Fees-This is a fee collected by the dealer for processing documents like title and registration.Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon are the five states that don't charge sales tax. It is possible to finance the cost of sales tax with the price of the car, depending on the state the car was purchased in. The following is a list of common fees associated with car purchases in the U.S. However, car buyers with low credit scores might be forced into paying fees upfront. FeesĪ car purchase comes with costs other than the purchase price, the majority of which are fees that can normally be rolled into the financing of the auto loan or paid upfront. While some used car dealers do offer cash rebates, this is rare due to the difficulty involved in determining the true value of the vehicle. Generally, rebates are only offered for new cars. They are Alaska, Arizona, Delaware, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, Vermont, and Wyoming. Luckily, a good portion of states do not do this and don't tax cash rebates. For example, purchasing a vehicle at $50,000 with a cash rebate of $2,000 will have sales tax calculated based on the original price of $50,000, not $48,000. Depending on the state, the rebate may or may not be taxed accordingly. Vehicle RebatesĬar manufacturers may offer vehicle rebates to further incentivize buyers. It is not rare to get low interest rates like 0%, 0.9%, 1.9%, or 2.9% from car manufacturers. Consumers in the market for a new car should start their search for financing with car manufacturers. Often, to promote auto sales, car manufacturers offer good financing deals via dealers. With dealer financing, the potential car buyer has fewer choices when it comes to interest rate shopping, though it's there for convenience for anyone who doesn't want to spend time shopping or cannot get an auto loan through direct lending. Getting pre-approved doesn't tie car buyers down to any one dealership, and their propensity to simply walk away is much higher. The contract is retained by the dealer but is often sold to a bank, or other financial institution called an assignee that ultimately services the loan.ĭirect lending provides more leverage for buyers to walk into a car dealer with most of the financing done on their terms, as it places further stress on the car dealer to compete with a better rate. Auto loans via dealers are usually serviced by captive lenders that are often associated with each car make. Dealership financing is somewhat similar except that the auto loan, and thus paperwork, is initiated and completed through the dealership instead. Once a contract has been entered with a car dealer to buy a vehicle, the loan is used from the direct lender to pay for the new car. The former comes in the form of a typical loan originating from a bank, credit union, or financial institution. Generally, there are two main financing options available when it comes to auto loans: direct lending or dealership financing. Money borrowed from a lender that isn't paid back can result in the car being legally repossessed. Each month, repayment of principal and interest must be made from borrowers to auto loan lenders. They work as any generic, secured loan from a financial institution does with a typical term of 36, 60, 72, or 84 months in the U.S. Most people turn to auto loans during a vehicle purchase. If only the monthly payment for any auto loan is given, use the Monthly Payments tab (reverse auto loan) to calculate the actual vehicle purchase price and other auto loan information. may still use the calculator, but please adjust accordingly. The Auto Loan Calculator is mainly intended for car purchases within the U.S. Related Cash Back or Low Interest Calculator | Auto Lease Calculator Oh, and that tricky prefix St.? It’s an abbreviation of Saint, so you must alphabetize it as if it was fully written out. Van Vogt would be alphabetized as van Vogt, A. A prefix followed by a surname should be considered as one word. Examples include D’, de, De, Del, Du, Fitz, La, le, Le, Mac, Mc, O’, St., van, and Van. Matthew Gaskell, for example, would be listed as Gaskell, G. And, on that same shelf, Macbeth comes before Merchant of Venice, which comes before Much Ado About Nothing.īut what about other names? Remember that names are always filed by the last name, first name or initial, middle name or initial. The plays of Aaron S orkin are shelved after the plays of William S hakespeare. On my bookshelf, Douglas A dams is placed before Isaac A simov because d comes before s alphabetically. If the first letters of the last name are the same, order according to the second letter. Alphabetical OrderĪlways alphabetize names by the first letter of the last name. Let’s take a look at some general rules of alphabetization as well as some of the rules which many people have difficulty with. Including, but not exclusive to, your bookshelf. Knowing those rules will help you to establish and maintain order in any record-keeping, listing, or filing system which you might have or need. There are rules to English alphabetization, and those rules are very precise. The same is true for general fiction, science fiction, mysteries, and westerns.Īlphabetizing is defined as the arrangement of words in alphabetical order. Thus, there’s a category for baking, with sub-categories for bread, cookies, and pies, among others. Cookbooks are arranged by category as well as author. If the author has more than one book, the books are then alphabetized by title. We have bookcases that are carefully alphabetized by an author’s last name. We find it necessary to shelve all those books in something which resembles an orderly system so that we can find them again. This way is often used for numbers in titles. My wife has been in the book business for…well…a very long time. Other times, they can be sorted as if they were normal, spelled-out words. Sometimes, they are listed in order from smallest to largest. Names are often written with the last names first. Names are usually ordered by Family name, not given name. Spaces and hyphens ( - ) are ignored, too.Ī formula can be used to systematically ignore a, an and the. Sometimes they are written at the end, after a comma. If many words have the same first letter, they are sorted by their second letters.Īfter that, the third and fourth letters are used until the whole list is sorted. A comes before B, and B comes before E, and E comes before L in the alphabet. Note that these may be different by language: Danish also has a letter ä, but sorts it after z, and not treated like a as in German.Ī list of items like Eric, Lydia, Andrea, and Bob is organized by their first letter. Option two: the letter is treated the same as some replacement: ä is replaced by ae, ö be oe, ü by ue, and ß by ss (Known as DIN 5007-2, used for phone books).(Known as DIN 5007-1, usually used for encyclopedias) Option one: the letter with diacritics is treated the same way as the one without, ä is treated as a, ö as o and ü as u.Note also, that there are different ways to sort numbers, and special characters, such as letters with diacritics. Different languages have different rules for sorting. Sorting things in English is done using the Roman alphabet. It became commonplace after the Renaissance. Some lists in alphabetical order were used during the early Roman Empire. It is done by following the standard (usual) order of letters in an alphabet. It helps a reader to find a name or a title in the list. Alphabetical order is a way to sort ( organize) a list. This preset is for Lightroom 3 but it can be easily updated to work with Lightroom 5. I put a final touch on this image using Matt Kloskowski’s Vintage preset in Lightroom. Gru and his Minions steal a shrink ray from a secret base in Asia but the up-and-coming super-villain, Vector, who is also responsible for the Pyramid theft, immediately steals it from Gru, as revenge for freezing his head earlier. Perkins is impressed by the plan, but will only provide the money if Gru can obtain the Shrink Ray first. The plan is quite expensive and Gru seeks a loan from the Bank of Evil, where the president Mr. Nefario, by shrinking and stealing the moon, an idea based on his childhood dream of being an astronaut, which is always discouraged by his mother Marlena. Gru decides to do better, with the assistance of Dr. Nefario as making "all other villains look lame." Gru, a super-villain, has his pride injured when a super-villain steals the Great Pyramid of Giza, an action that is described by his colleague Dr. It is the start of The Minions and Despicable Me series. It is the ninth highest-grossing film of 2010 (behind Jurassic Park 3, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, Madagascar (2005), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Shrek Forever After, Finding Nemo, Up (2009) and Wall-E), the fourth highest-grossing animated film of 2010 (behind The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Iron man 2 (2010) and Wall-E), and the 39th highest-grossing animated film of all time. it stars Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, Miranda Cosgrove, Will Arnett and Kristen Wiig with Dana Gaier, Elsie Fisher, Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud in supporting roles. When Gru learns of Vector's heist, he plans an even greater heist to shrink and steal The Moon. The film debuted at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 9, 2010, and was theatrically released in the United States on July 9, 2010, the film stars Steve Carell as Gru, a super-villain who adopts three girls ( Miranda Cosgrove as Margo, Dana Gaier as Edith and Elsie Fisher as Agnes) from an orphanage and Jason Segel as Vector, a rival of Gru who steals the Great Pyramid of Giza. Newcomers for the fourth movie are Will Ferrell as supervillain Maxime Le Mal, Sofia Vergara as Le Mal's girlfriend Valentina and Joey King as aspiring supervillain Poppy, while Stephen Colbert and Chloe Fineman have been cast in undisclosed roles.Despicable Me is an American computer-animated 3D adventure comedy-crime film distributed by Universal Pictures as the first offering from its Illumination division. We don't yet know whether Julie Andrews, who has voiced Gru and Dru's mother Marlena in the majority of the movies to date, will be back but we'd be surprised if she didn't return even for another brief cameo like in the third movie. Steve Coogan is back as Silas Ramsbottom, the former director of the Anti-Villain League, and the beloved Minions, including Mel, Kevin, Stuart and Bob, will again be brought to life by Pierre Coffin (who, for the first time, is not co-directing). Kristen Wiig will reprise her role as Gru's wife Lucy Wilde, and Miranda Cosgrove will also be back as Gru and Lucy's oldest adopted daughter Margo alongside Dana Gaier and Madison Polan as their other adopted daughters Edith and Agnes, respectively. Steve Carell is, of course, be back as Gru (and probably his twin brother Dru) in Despicable Me 4, and he'll be joined by some familiar faces. Despicable Me 4 cast: Who's coming back for Despicable Me 4? For instance, we never hear of the Dakota "War" of 1862 (Santee Sioux went on the war path and murdered between 600-800 white settlers, which constituted the largest death toll inflicted upon American civilians by an enemy force until 9/11), The Ward Massacre, The Nez Perce uprising which killed dozens of settlers in Idaho and Wyoming, and the Massacre at Fort Mims. Yet we never hear the other side of what caused these events nor do we hear of the atrocities of Natives committed against New Americans. Since the 60s-70s there has been an overemphasis on the injustices committed by the US Army or settlers and we get a handful of examples: Wounded Knee, Bear River and Sand Creek (the latter being what "Soldier Blue" is based on). In reality, utterly barbaric attacks applied to both uncivilized Natives and the civilized Europeans, but more so with the former, which is documented. In other words, it loses its impact because it's so overdone. The final massacre is shocking, but hampered by the film's insistence on stacking the deck so completely in terms of depicting the US military as savages dripping with ee-vil. The opening Indian attack is set in order to align the audience's sympathies with Honus (Strauss, the 'Soldier Blue' of the title), so that the viewer travels on the same journey as him, starting by regarding the Indians as murderous barbarians, and ending up forced to confront the idea that maybe his kin are just as barbaric when the occasion is 'right' (or, should I say, wrong). This controversial Western showcases the atrocities of the US Army against Native Americans wherein the average US Cavalry solder is depicted as a shifty, droop-eyed, unwashed, stupid cracker idiot with flies buzzing around his head. As they travel together to get back to the soldier's unit he struggles with his affection for the woman and a revulsion for her anti-US government outlook. Released in 1970 and directed by Ralph Nelson, "Soldier Blue" is a Western starring Peter Strauss and Candice Bergen as a soldier and Native sympathizer, the only two survivors of a cavalry group Massacred by the Cheyenne. Spotted Wolf's head attached to the stirrup of a cavalryman was not cut and is shown in the release print, and there are stills showing his mutilated body lying on the ground without the head and four cavalrymen running around with his severed head in their hands, howling and laughing while blood is spurting from the neck stump. Some of these cut and never included in any official version scenes include shots of Indian women's breasts being sliced off and thrown around children's limbs graphically severed (real amputees were employed for these shots) a little girl's legs cut off by wagon wheels a soldier gleefully cutting an Indian's arms off before shooting another Cheyenne in the eye the fate of Spotted Wolf, who is beheaded and his head is hoisted as a trophy by a soldier before he tosses it to another soldier, who then throws it off camera. This was the only time that the full uncut version was shown, and it caused the studio to decide that it was unreleasable unless massive cuts were made to the film's violent scenes. When it was test-screened to an audience, they almost started a riot after watching this version. Original work print of the movie was 135 minutes long.
